Half Hourglass Flying Geese

Hi all. Here is the block I created for September bee blocks. They are half hourglass triangles that have a great look of flying geese.

The background is all low volumes. I love light with colorful or whatever you think works. Also, for the triangles I would like bright saturated colors that read one color (no solids please).  It’s ok if they have other colors as long as it reads just one.

For each block you will need…

4 - 4” color blocks

4 - 4” low volume blocks

8 - 3.5” low volume blocks

4 - 3” low volume blocks

Draw diagonal lines one way on all the 4” and 3.5” low volume blocks.

Using the 4” low volume and color blocks, sew on either side of the lines and make half square triangles.

Cut on the line and press the seam towards the color. Keep them in pairs when you do this.

Add the 3.5” on top lining up the points with the half square triangle, making half hourglass blocks

Sew on either side of the lines using a scant quarter inch. Cut and press seam towards the color again.

Trim the half hourglass blocks to 3” square.

Lay out block, paying attention to the low volume zig zag. The 3” square goes on the bottom of the strip.

Press the seams down, towards the bottom of the strip.

Lay out the block; point up, down, up, down. The seams should nest nicely.

Sew together and press all seams in one direction. The block should measure 10.5” x 13”.
